Laphroaig's most popular release. This is a tour de force from the Islay distillery, first launched for the duty-free market. The whiskey is first aged in bourbon barrels, then transferred to quarter casks, and finally aged in Oloroso sherry European oak butts. With a tone of peat smoke and sweetness, it's a stunner.

Nose: Oily toffee and molasses Dates, walnuts, and Maker's Mark barrel notes (vanilla, toastiness, sweetness etc). Butter, zest, cold wood smoke, almond, and passion fruit abound. Palate: Dry and medicinal, with exotic spices and maybe some turmeric thrown in for good measure. At first, the palate is surprisingly savoury, with a "dry wetness" that John noted imagine musty wood barns and hints of a damp fall woodland floor. The sherry aromas are present as well, we get a much more controlled iced fruitcake with undertones of Laphroaig's signature smoke. Finish: Oaked. The mustiness lingers in the end, which is complemented by oily spices and dried fruit |
